AMIU Genova (multiservice company for urban sanitation) was established in 1986 in order to deal with the entire urban solid waste cycle, an activity formerly carried out directly by the Municipality of Genoa. A few years later it became a Special Company, one of the legal forms provided by the italian Law 142 on the regulation of local autonomy to manage services of economic and entrepreneurial importance. In 2002 it became a joint-stock company, completing the evolutionary path that subsequently led it to become a Group. For over thirty years since its establishment, AMIU Genova has become one of the leading Italian operators in the environmental sector. Today, AMIU Genova is the in-house company of the Municipality of Genoa and covers all services related to waste management and the environment: from street cleaning to separate waste collection, from waste treatment to environment reclamation, up to the management of recycling plants and final disposal. Thanks to the new service contract, entered into force on January 1st 2021, AMIU Genova has become a point of reference for the waste cycle in the Metropolitan City of Genoa; in addition to the Ligurian capital, it manages the waste stream of 30 other municipalities in Liguria.
