Athens offers competitive incentives, available land and a skilled workforce. Strategically located in East Texas, Athens is only an hour drive southeast of Dallas. Recent Awards: 2018 Award of Excellence for Outstanding Single Community with a population under 20,000 by Business Retention & Expansion International 2018 Impact Award by Business Retention & Expansion International 2018 Merit Recognition Award for Workforce Excellence by Texas Economic Development Council (Population less than 15,000) 2017 Awarded Economic Excellence by Texas Economic Development Council 2016 Awarded Economic Excellence by Texas Economic Development Council 2016 Recipient of the Community Economic Development Award (Population 5,001 to 15,000) by Texas Economic Development Council In May 1990, voters elected to permit the collection of a half-cent sales tax to fund the economic growth of Athens, Texas. Following the May election, Athens Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) was created on October 8, 1990. These funds can be used to assist companies with infrastructure, relocation, training, and other needs. In 2005, AEDC became a Type B Corporation which provides for broader uses of the funds received.
