At Farming Data, our social mission is to improve market access and decision-making in the supply chain for smallholder farmers and buyers. We are a startup aiming to connect small-scale farmers with buyers and to enable farming communities to sell more, for more, using mobile technology. Many rural small-scale producers rely on selling produce as a primary form of income for their family. However, two major problems are logistical inefficiencies and high levels of intermediation. Smallholder farmers also tend to lack appropriate instruments and efficient marketing channels that link to markets directly. By more efficiently and conveniently connecting farmers to buyers, we bring benefits to both farmers and value-adding buyers in the form of higher frequency of sales, significant logistical improvements, and less food waste. Our solution is a digital trading platform that enables direct transactions between farmers and buyers through SMS, text-to-voice, and smartphone application. Key data analytics generated by our platform will be returned to the farmer, as it is vital for them to understand local market dynamics to make better decisions.
