Kintsugi

Kintsugi started in April 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japanese Zen philosophy, the name 'Kintsugi' literally means ‘to join with gold'. It is said that the broken pieces of an accidentally-smashed pot should be carefully reassembled and then glued together with gold powder. There should be no attempt to disguise the damage, the point is to render the fault-lines beautiful and strong. The precious veins of gold are there to emphasise that breaks have a philosophically-rich merit all of their own. This image and process symbolises the situation that the world currently finds itself in. A lot has been broken. These breaks need to be recognised and mended with care and diligence.
