Kynetyka Technologies is an Australian Medical Device company dedicated to improving the management of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). DVT typically begins as a clot in the leg causing pain and swelling. If the clot breaks off, it can travel to the lungs where it may cause a pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be fatal. DVT is a major healthcare problem with 10 million cases per year worldwide, and over 60,000 deaths per year in the USA alone. Ultrasound is typically used to diagnose DVT but in 75% of suspected cases, no DVT is found by ultrasound, meaning that the patient has had an unnecessary procedure involving patient transport, expert operators and expensive equipment. Further, while waiting for the ultrasound result, patients are typically prescribed anticoagulants in case there is a DVT. Kynetyka's proprietary DVTect technology enables DVT to be quickly and efficiently detected at the bedside, saving on the cost of unnecessary ultrasound tests and reducing use of anticoagulants, which reduces risk of bleeding. DVTect is also designed to detect DVT where it may be missed by clinical assessment. When a patient has a DVT in the leg, the natural movement of the calf changes - DVTect is designed to detect that change. The DVTect sensor is attached to the back of the calf with suspected DVT - when the calf is moved, the movement data is captured by the sensor and the data transmitted to the DVTect software on a device - tablet, phone - where it is analysed using the other leg as a control. Normal movement is Ok, meaning no DVT is present. Abnormal movement means a DVT may be present and the patient would be sent for a confirmatory ultrasound. DVTect has been shown to effectively detect DVT in preliminary clinical studies with no false-negatives. The initial application for DVTect is expected to be in hospital patients following major surgery, especially hip and knee replacement, then expand to community use in aged-care, maternal health and general medicine.
