Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) contribute up to 45 percent of total employment and up to 33 percent of national income (GDP) in emerging economies*. The same study suggests there are between 365-445 million micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging markets. But SMEs face unique challenges, which affect their growth and profitability and hence, diminish their ability to contribute effectively to sustainable development. Despite the big role SMEs play in the economy past statistics indicate that three out of five businesses fail within the first few months of operation. Causes to the failure include limited market access, limited access to information, finances and technology and unfavourable policy and regulatory environment among others**.
