Emmen now has approximately 108,000 inhabitants. This makes Emmen the largest municipality in Drenthe and the second largest in the Northern Netherlands. Emmen also accommodates the most extensive concentration of industry and devotes the highest number of hectares to glasshouse horticulture of any other municipality in the Northern Netherlands. With its many facilities, this municipality is the centre of activity for the Southeast Drenthe and Southern Groningen regions inhabited by more than a quarter of a million people. These people come to Emmen to work, shop or attend educational facilities. Here they can find opportunities for entertainment such as the theatre, the cinema, or other cultural events.
