We often begin by defining how finance and technology create value for the enterprise, and quickly move to take stuff off the plate of the CEO/founder. Our involvement is typically as a member of the team, albeit at a "part-time" rate and presence. We will work to "right-size" an engagement--day a month to 2 days a week--based on the backlog of requirements and pace needed. Clients find it a great way to plan for a full-time version, which we can help them recruit.
