Shinya Mouri

Innovation Studio Okayama

Architect and designer Shinya Mouri, director of Innovation Studio Okaymaya traveled to Norway for a year as a teenager and was profoundly affected by the natural beauty and curves of the country side. In the evening he learned wood curving and started to understand that the hand of the artisan could also be a tool of communication. After studying architecture in Osaka Institute of Technology, he enrolled at the University of East London to study architectural composition, syntax and materiality under Peter Salter. After a year of study, he joined to Gumuchdjian Architects in 2003 to internalize Gumuchdjin's architectural concept of "textured minimal" and "architectural generosity". In 2007, he moved to Paris to work at Ateliers Jean Nouvel / Jean Nouvel Design to internalize Nouvel's architectural concept of "filmic" and "vanishing architecture", leaving to establish his own practice in Japan in 2009. Following his return to Japan, he taught architectural design at Showa Women's University and he is currently teaching at Okayama Institute of Technology & Science. He has introduced as talented Japanese young architect at The Word Magazine (http://www.thewordmagazine.be/issues/the-nippon-issue/) and got Okayama Award in 2014 and Build architecture awards in 2019. With a focus on interior design, Innovation Studio Okayama pursue the creation of "autonomous architecture and town" that cultivates the future culture while respecting "Love, Appreciation, Innovation" to the history, culture, and style inherited from our predecessors.
